Notes from 2016 Bangalore Ultra

Nuff' Done?

Is enough ever enough?

When I started running 11 years ago, out of sheer gymming boredom, I never imagined that the high of running would last as long as it has. I would have certainly laughed if someone told me that one day I would end up running 50K – the Ultra.

Truth be told, as I write this piece my memory of Bangalore Ultra 50K is already fading and I am thinking 100K! My hope though is that Surabhi, my wife, isn’t reading this piece.

2016 was the 10th edition of Bangalore Ultra. Quite an achievement for a running event which doesn’t boast of big sponsors like SCMM or ADHM. Nevertheless, the Ultra - as it is called - has its own fan following in the runner community. The bonhomie, the cult and the pure joy of running in the forest and grasslands all come together here. Very different from the road races that I've previously participated in.

I have read books on running such as Born to Run, Eat and Run etc. Unlike any other sport such as tennis or cricket, I am yet to come across anyone practicing to become an ultra-marathoner from a young age. I did not practice for it and I did not plan for it.

So, anyone out there wondering if they have a shot at becoming a long-distance runner, short answer is YES. All it takes is to start today and follow that road in front of you. I did many years ago and I am still running. And, running faster than before.

Gender Bender

Gender diversity is a BIG topic in corporate India.

The diversity was hugely evident at the Ultra too. All the races including 50K, 100K and 24-hour run saw participation from female runners. Very inspiring and energizing to see women taking long strides in distance running formats.
